How has this experience (Internship) made you consider your college path that will ultimately lead to your career?
Internship for me has opened my eyes about what I thought I wanted to do. I previously thought I would want to work on cars and that I would enjoy this due to my passion for cars. With this internship experience I realized that I do like to work on cars and I would like to have an old muscle car in the future and work on it myself but I would not like to work on others cars everyday as a mechanic. With this I feel possibly looking toward the future as leaning toward my other interest which is in the interest of law enforcement. I have yet to experience this as well and it could be as in this situation where an interest could be figured out but I have yet to find out. My college path is still unknown to me and I haven't really found it yet. Overall this internship experience helped me discover somethings and narrow down possibilities for my future. With observations of my mentor and my fellow coworkers in the workspace I observed times if fun and laughter but also times of seriousness. It is great to enjoy yourself and maintain great relationships with your coworkers. But also crucial to get the work done that has to get done. With this feel of environment I felt I was able to adapt well and proceed to get all the tasks I was assigned done. Overall a great experience in a real world work environment. Below are pictures taken throughout the course of my internship. Showing different parts of the shop while showing different projects that were worked on during the time that I was there. I got to be a part of all the projects in some shape or form which was great. I will be commenting on Dylan and Cheyennes Posts. How did you make a meaningful contribution to your workplace?
I believe all the tasks that I completed at my internship were all to help and make a contribution to the business. Wether it was organization, cleaning, or working on customers cars. All these things in some way helped the shop and contributed. How did your project go from an idea or inspiration to a final product? At first it was difficult to come up with an idea for my internship. I then discussed this with my mentor. He helped me come up with the plan to create a how to video. They already have some for the company but one more would not hurt. I did it on something that we were currently working on and with his help we were able to make it come together. How was your work significant or meaningful to the world beyond school and your specific internship site? I believe the majority of my work was able to help customers of the shop. Many things I did were to help finish customer cars. Wether it was installing parts or helping with wiring. A variety of tasks were done and they were all to finish the job and make the customer happy. What qualities or characteristics did you see in the people around you that you want to develop in yourself? Why? Some qualities that I saw I will try to work towards in the future. Some being problem solving or view on things. At times I would try something and just not be able to figure it out. My mentor wold then come over and proceed to help me solve the problem. At times it was very simple and trying something I Hadn't tried but his view and knowledge allowed him to figure it out. How might internship influence the direction of your life? I think being at the shop for this period of time has allowed me to really see what it is like to work on cars everyday. I enjoyed it but I believe it would be more enjoyable as a hobby and not as a job. Possibly having your job but then having a project car that you work on. How did interpersonal relationships and/or collaboration at work influence your understanding of life outside of high school? Internship helps me understand how having great relationships with your coworkers and boss is crucial to have a good daily experience at work as these people are gonna be people you see everyday. Having good relationships with all that is possible is overall a good thing. I will be commenting on Dylan and Arucans Blogs. Here are my 5 photos for my essay. Overall view of the shop and showing all projects that are currently being worked on. Some projects are here for months at a time while others are only here for only a couple of days. Overall many projects taking place at the same time. I will be commenting on Cheyenne and Dylans Blog Posts. How have you advocated for yourself during your internship, or seen advocacy demonstrated in other situations?
For my internship I feel like I have had a big responsibility to ask questions when i see things unsure. This is because of the fact that I am working on customers cars. Is something were to happen if could affect my mentors business in a negative way. I have found myself asking questions when I am the slightest bit unsure because I want to make sure that the job is done correctly Are you following the advice in "How to be an intern everyone remembers"? If so, how is it working out? If not, what are you going to start doing? I believe I have been doing well. I have been sure to always have a task. We usually have many things that have to be doing around the shop so utilizing time to get the most work done is crucial. When I don't have a specific task I usually watch my mentor do work as when we started he also told me the best way to learn is watch. So I believe I have been doing well in my internship. I will be commenting on Dylan and Jeremy's Blog Posts. What you plan on doing/creating?
At first it was hard to really determine what I wanted to do for my internship project. After discussing it with my mentor we agreed that I could create a how to video. I would be learning how to do something new and create a new video for the shop. What skills you will need in order for it to be awesome? I believe fully understanding exactly what i'm learning will be crucial in order for explanation in video to be good. Other than that I believe the video should be good. What support you will need, and who you will need it from. I believe the most support that I will be needing is from my mentor. He will be the one showing me the new skill and further explanation of finer details of how he would like the video to be done. I will be commenting on Jeremy and Cheyenne's blog posts. These are the questions I asked my mentor to learn more about the organization and him.
Questions What skills and training are necessary for your position? Many skills are necessary and many take time to learn. I have over 35 years experience in vehicle maintenance and restoration. It cannot be taught in a short time or in a class. You have to do it for a long time. What is the purpose of this organization? The purpose is to make money. All business is to make money. The goal is that the business will bring me and my customers happiness. It is very important to love what you do. However the function of the organization is a trade my time for money. What does it take to be successful in this organization? Patience and persistence. Patience is key from when dealing with customers to when actually working on cars. Persistence is key to working on cars as at times problems may be encountered and it's crucial to be persistent in order to get past it. How important is getting along with other people in your career? It is imperative. Everyone in the industry has their specialty and we all rely on each other to get jobs done. Communication between many shops or businesses can occur for one project. Having good relationships can benefit you with finishing a project in all aspects. What other personality traits, skills, or knowledge is important here? Communication and sales. How to talk to customers is something that is very important. Keeping their confidence and assuring that you are taking care of them is also crucial. The industry has gained a bad wrap making it more difficult to gain the customers trust. Reflection Has anything happened that's worth telling us about? Funny stories? On May 16th, I was tasked on putting a lift kit on a truck. With this came the replacement of the front A arms. With the removal of the first A arm I brought it to the front so I could grab the right one. My mentor and I both looked at the two arms, compared them side by side, and both agreed for sure it was the right one. After I finished the job he took the truck out for a test drive. When he returned he told me we had put the wrong A arms on the wrong side. We were both in shock as we had both looked at them and agreed on which one went where. With this I did the job again and switched the arms. Overall it was a good task but very interesting to see how even with both of our agreeing we still put the wrong ones. What new skills are you developing (or will you need to develop) for this internship? I think one of the most crucial ones is problem solving or being able to look at tasks from different angles. At time when you can't do something, taking a step back came sometimes be what you need to figure out. I am finding this out as I continue to more and more everyday. How are you getting to and from internship? What is it like to be commuting? I have been driving to and from internship everyday. My internship is approximately only about 15 minutes away so my daily commute is not bad. Overall commuting every day has been great. What have you learned about your organization's mission and purpose? I have learned that because this is a small shop the mission here is to create quality work. Here the work being done is not just average oil changes and small things, but cars being made form the ground up which requires a higher quality of work. Overall mission to create high quality products and satisfy the customer. I will be commenting on Cheyenne and Dylans blog posts. What strikes you most about your workplace?
The thing that struck me most about my workplace was the size along with functionality. The shop is relatively small but when properly organized a lot of things fit. Even with 4 cars in the shop you still have enough space to get work done. What strikes you most about your colleagues? I really like the people that I work with. My mentor (David) and another employee ( Jake) are really good at answering questions I may have about things getting done. They are also just great people to be around and overall good. What strikes you most about the job you're doing? Nothing really strikes me but I have done a variety of things from organization tasks to working on different cars. I have organized a corner of the shop and also done a variety of things in different cars we have had in. Overall nothing has struck me though. What are you excited about? I am excited to continue moving forward and work on even more different cars. There is more projects coming in soon that seem exciting and making progress on cars already in is also very exciting. Overall just excited about internship as a whole. What are you worried about? Im not really worried about anything. Everything seems to be going very smoothly and I plan on making that continue as I move forward with my internship. Noah Godina
Bent Motorsports Shop Owner Teodora Nikolova Contact Person - David Beckett [email protected] Describe your first impressions of the place. Focus on descriptive language and making the reader picture where you are. My first impressions of my internship place are very good. It is a small shop in San Marcos but has everything you need. When you walk in there is front desk followed by an office past it to the left. This is my mentors office. Past this is the garage. Here you can find multiple cars some on lifts and some in pieces that are currently being built. Overall it is a great environment. Describe what you think a typical work day is like at this site. How big is the site? How many people work there? What is the atmosphere? Business? Business casual? A typical work day is coming into the shop at 9:00. Then starting on current projects that need to be done. Currently there is a 1967 Chevrolet truck and a Land Rover Defender currently being built. Then after working lunch is around 12:00. Then after lunch work continues. Approximately around 5:00 clean up starts. Making sure tools are back where they belong and making sure the shop is clean as possible. Then heading out and coming back the next day. The shop is not too big but its the right size to fit abut 5 cars. Only 2 people work here. The atmosphere is one that is very relaxed but one that can be more serious when work has to get done. Who will you interact with on a daily basis? Who will you “report” to? How often? In what protocol/fashion? On a daily basis I will be interacting with my mentor and another employee who works at the shop. I will constantly be checking in with my Mentor throughout the day for tasks to do as we will be working very closely. We will be checking in verbally throughout the day. What do you think the business's general work policies are (tardiness, absence, etc.)? My mentor stated to me that being on time for him was very important and that trying hard to learn new things and paying attention are things that he noticed and really valued. Describe the dress code. What does that mean to you? The Dress code is one that is very relaxed. I am allowed to wear what I want due to the fact the working in this environment clothes may get dirty. Overall still dressing normally in a casual environment but being aware of the environment I will be in. Please write a reflection about your Career Day experience. What do you expect the professional world there to be like? Overall my Career Day experience was very good. I learned how daily things run at the shop and the type of things that get done on a daily basis. Throughout the day I did a variety of things from helping put in a gas tank to cleaning the chassis of a car. Overall I believe that as I learn more I will be able to do more challenge things. I believe that in this professional environment things are more difficult as things have a deadline and problems have to be solved in order to continue to move forward. In what ways do you expect your high school classes and the skills you have learned to apply to this profession? I think all the classes have taken contribute to my knowledge. And with this knowledge base I believe I will be able to solve problems that are presented to me throughout my time at my internship. |
