LA Times April 9, 2018 "Uber buys Jump Bikes and enters the electric bike sharing business" Josh Edelson This article is about Uber the transportation network company moving on and taking in something new, bicycles. They are going into and becoming interested in the idea of introducing bike sharing into their system. This could be very good due to all the success they have already had.
They started by buying electric bike startup jump bikes. This idea and concept of adding bike sharing into their already very successful platform I believe will be very successful. This will add a yet cheaper alternative for people looking to get around. " We're committed to bringing together multiple modes of transportation within the Uber app — so that you can choose the fastest or most affordable way to get where you're going, whether that's in an Uber, on a bike, on the subway, or more," Dara Khosrowshahi. This step forward with bike sharing brings the company as a whole closer to this goal of multiple modes of transportation with different price points making it more available to more people. These bikes will feature a motor in the front wheel and a bike on the frame of the bike. Unlike other systems where they can be left wherever there is sidewalk space, Jump bikes have to locked to a bike rack magnetically with a U lock integrated into the frame. Jump bikes cost 2 dollars for 30 minutes of ride time. I believe this event happened because this is Ubers goal. Them buying Jump signals the drive to continue to go beyond its core ride-hailing services. Uber has been working to possibly partner with fixed transit systems and pursuing autonomous vehicle ventures, food delivery services and now bike sharing. All part of their goal to bring multiple modes off transportation to their company. To me this seems like something that can be very successful if done in the right place with people that will benefit the most from it. It this price point is correct then I can see many people doing this. Overall seems like a great step forward for Uber as a whole. http://www.latimes.com/business/technology/la-fi-tn-uber-jump-bikes-20180409-story.html I will comment on Dylan Lewis’s and Micah Hacker’s blog posts. November 11, 2017 “ How To Engineer A Car That Goes 277.9 MPH “ Jack Stewart This article talks about the Koenigsegg Agera RS breaking the production car speed record. The average speed of two runs was 277.9. This speed was a new world record, previously held by a speed of 270.49. Koenigsegg is a small Swedish Car brand, they broke the record with one of their cars the Koenigsegg Agera RS. This car is powered by a V8 engine producing over 1,300 horsepower. Going at these great speeds pushes the limits of engineers and everything they work on from aerodynamics to tire rubber and suspension. While going this fast requires downforce too much could harm the suspension of the vehicle. Yet again with this much power grip could be an issue also, Michelin was also there making sure their tires were up to par. At such high speeds everything changes, a small bump in the road could lift the front end of the car causing it to go airborne instantly. Achieving these high speeds is a feat all together from performance to the courage in the driver. The driver was Niklas Lilja a factory driver for Koenigsegg. If you would had the possibility to buy a Agera RS it would cost you between 1.5 - 2 Million Dollars. The record was made on a 11 mile closed section of the Nevada Highway. This event took place November 4, 2017. Koenigsegg since it's beginning has made supercars with high horsepower with high speeds. The first time they broke a record was in 2002 with their car a Koenigsegg CCR. They broke the record in 2005 with a top speed of 387.86 km/h ( 241 Mph). After this they wanted the title again and managed to take it with the Agera RS. I really like Koenigsegg. All their cars are very interesting. Even though they are not as big as Ferrari Or Lamborghini they can still definitely compete if not do better than these companies. Having one of their cars would be a dream for me. Hearing about one of their cars having the record really exciting for me as I really like the company but it was a great moment for the company as a whole. Most of their cars are very expensive but nothing is impossible. https://www.roadandtrack.com/car-culture/a13301712/koenigsegg-agera-rs-speed-record/ The Rising Sun The next day a newspaper runs a story about Smith, Graham, and Connor’s actions as racist and also accuses them of using Police Brutality. The chief tells them the investigation is over but Smith isn’t satisfied. He has to make copies of the tapes for the department so he heads to the USC. There Smith meets an interesting women, Theresa Asakuma, a Japanese student who is an expert on computers and software manipulation. She is able to quickly point out that the tapes were copies. After securing copies of the tapes, Smith then picks up Connor from his golf game with several Japanese friends. These friends were of very high power and Connor was not pleased to leave. They decide to visit companies and industries involved with Nakamoto, in order to learn more about the killer's motives. After talking to several companies they decide to meet with U.S. Senator John Morton.Smith and Theresa then deduce that Eddie had been set up by the Japanese. They had altered the tapes to make him seem like the killer. They undo the changes done to the tapes, Senator Morton Turned out to be the real killer and Eddie had been just a witness. Connor and Smith decide to return to Smith’s apartment. When they get there they discover Eddie Sakamura, alive. The man who had actually been killed in the car crash was actually a Japanese security officer named Tanaka who had been in Eddie’s garage. He was searching for the tapes, before panicking from the police arriving and leaving in Eddie's car. The trio then confront Senator Morton. He confesses to his role in Cheryl Austin’s death. The senator then shoots himself in a bathroom. Soon afterward Ishiguro arrives to confront Eddie and the two detectives, making subtle threats to their lives. Eddie reacts very calmly. This made Connor believe that Eddie still possessed an original copy of the tape from the security cameras. Smith and Connor then travel to Eddie’s home, where they find him tortured to death. They believe it was ishiguro who was trying to find the location of the stolen tape. Connor then drops Smith off at his home. Smith realizes that Eddie had left the tape there in his home. Ishiguro's men arrive he quickly orders his babysitter to hide his daughter and herself in the upstairs bedroom. Connor sneaks back to Smith’s apartment with a bulletproof vest. This then turns into gun battle with the thugs. Smith is shot in the back, but the vest saved his life. The next day the Smith and Connor watch the tape that Eddie had left behind. Cheryl wasn't accidentally killed by Morton, but murdered by Ishiguro after Morton and Eddie left. They go to the Nakamoto Tower to apprehend Ishiguro. Conner radios the police dispatcher. He, knowing the Japanese, knows that they are monitoring the frequency and will be prepared for the arrest. They arrive and ishiguro is in a important meeting. They show the tape to everybody in the meeting. When Ishiguro sees that Japanese executives have all left the meeting room he commits suicide by jumping off the Nakamoto Tower. I think I would prefer to write a sequel to this book . Since John Connor is now older I would probably make a story of him during during his primetime as an officer. Smith would probably not be a part of it. He would probably not be a part of the police force then. I think it would be really cool to see a previous side to Connor since we just know him as an older wiser man. The story would be a case that he had worked and really shaped him. Possibly with a partner. I believe this would be really interesting to read. This book for me was very interesting and I really loved it. I really like the way things were described in this book by the author. I would totally recommend this book to a friend. This book is for sure one of the best books I have read.
I will be commenting on Micah Hacker and Dylan Lewis’s Posts. The Rising Sun Continuing on with the story now, they have found out more about how the japanese companies are working. The body was now examined and more things were found out. DNA from the body revealed the the person who had killed her was indeed Japanese. THis narrowed down the group of people that they were looking at and considering. They also were able to finally get footage from the building from the floor where the murder had taken place. But they did find out that these tapes were indeed copies and not originals. After looking through the footage thoroughly they found out who the killer was, Eddie Sakamura. Through different camera angles they were able to see his face clearly. But when they finally went to his house to arrest him it led to a car chase where Eddie Sakamura crashed his ferrari and killed himself. At first they thought that this was all over but they have been continuing to look into the case. A character that I would interact with is John Connor. John Connor seems like a very interesting person with a lot of knowledge. It seems like a great mentor because of all his experience as a police officer. I think it would interesting to be part of this story and also very adrenaline rushing. Lots of things that are very exciting. I believe I would get along with John Connor. He seems like a super interesting person that would be very interesting to get along with due to all his experiences and knowledge about japanese and this case. The way he is portrayed in this story he seems like a person that would be a really good mentor. I think I would struggle to get along with Graham. Graham is one of the chiefs in the police department who has been calling them and telling them what to do. His attitude is very demanding and I feel like I would get angry with him very quickly. His attitude is one that I would not like.
Will be commenting on Dylan and Micah's Blog Posts. The Rising SunThey have now gone to investigate the recordings of cameras in the floors of most interest. The floor of the party and the floor of the murder. When they reach the security office, the tapes are clear, which means that they were taken or possibly the recordings were erased. After talking about this, they decided to investigate with the news stations to see if they captured footage of the victim before entering the party to see if she talked to anybody. After reviewing tapes they find out that she talked to one man which Connor has run into, Eddie Sakamura. They look for him at a restaurant that he is co owner of to find out that he is at a party in the hills. They go to this house to see if they are able to find him, which they do after a very minor struggle with some guards. Sakamura is surprised to see Connor again but after a long talk, Connor decides to not take Sakamura due to some previous encounters and his sixth sense. The most important relationship in this book is between Peter Smith and John Connor. The relationship between the two is a very respected relationship with wonderings about each other. Connor is an older and more experienced while Smith is younger and more experienced. Smith almost has an admiration because of Connors record he has when he was a cop, but as the story has been continuing they continue to learn and understand things about each other. John Connor is very experienced with the Japanese after living in Japan. This really helps them both to get an insight on the Japanese and the way they are thinking. I think them becoming more comfortable with each other is really allowing both of them to open up an share more of their ideas to each other, allowing them to get farther in the case.
The Rising Sun
This article by Austin Ramzy is about the eruption of Mount Kusatsu-Shirane. This eruption caused avalanches which injured soldiers and skiers nearby. Many people were hit by rocks and injured.
On Tuesday January 23, 2018 Mount Kusatsu Shirane Erupted. This killed and injured soldiers and skiers. This Volcano had not erupted in over 3000 years and had no recent activity which led to this being a big surprise. This eruption caused avalanches which caused 7 military soldiers in the avalanches. This required them to go to the hospital. The ministry of defense said that later that day one of the soldiers did die. Ten people were hit by rocks, 5 were injured seriously and 5 others were injured from debris that broke the windows of a gondola. It was made sure that this was a volcano eruption which also means that his volcano could erupt again in the near future. For this reason access to the area near the volcano has been restricted for safety reasons.
Took place at Mount Kusatsu-Shirane. 100 miles northwest of Tokyo on January 23, 2018. There is no specific reason for this happening. There was no activity before to indicate that the volcano would erupt which did not give the people a warning. This all was a surprise. Due to the fact that the last eruption was 3,000 years ago there was no pattern to indicate this would happen. This event was not as bad as it could have been. Although it did take the life of a person only a couple of people were injured. This event could have been much worse where it could have taken the lives of more people. I will comment on Dylan Lewis and Jeremy Ong's Blog Posts.
